What an ANC commissioner does
An Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner is the closest elected official to your daily life in DC. The role is part-time and unpaid. It is also more powerful than most people realize.
Who you represent
Each commissioner represents a single-member district of about 2,000 neighbors. That is roughly a few blocks. You are their voice at City Hall.
What you weigh in on
Commissioners advise the city on zoning and liquor licenses. Public space and new development fall under it too. By law the city must give an ANC's written positions great weight. That is real leverage for your block.
The time it takes
The core commitment is one evening meeting a month of about 60 to 90 minutes. Add the neighbor conversations you choose. Many commissioners balance it with a full-time job.
Why it matters
Decisions about your neighborhood get made either way. A commissioner makes sure your neighbors have someone inside the room. This is local power built block by block. You can see the seat where you live and who represents it now.
Could this be you? You do not need experience or money to start. If you know your block you already have the main qualification.
