The questions every first-time host asks — answered plainly.
What's an ANC?
An Advisory Neighborhood Commission is the most local government in DC — your literal blocks. Commissioners are unpaid neighbors who weigh in on the everyday things close to home. Think safety and housing and permits and liquor licenses. There are 345 seats across the city.
What do I actually do as a host?
You gather five to fifteen neighbors for one hour. The kit hands you the whole agenda and the words to say. You are a facilitator not an expert. Your real job is a warm room and one naming round.
What if only a few people show up?
A small room is a good room. Three neighbors who lean in beats a crowd that drifts. The naming round works with any number. Even two people can name someone their block already trusts.
Is this partisan?
ANC seats are officially nonpartisan — no party label on the ballot. This program is run by Capital Stonewall Democrats to help queer and allied neighbors step up. You are building neighborhood power not running a party campaign.
Is it safe?
Yes and you set the terms. Host with a co-host and pick a spot you like. Never put a home address on anything public — the RSVP link is enough. The naming round never collects anyone's name.
